QUEZON CITY, June 4, 2026 — Thirty Filipino workers joined tonight’s rush-hour Bike Bus [1] through some of Quezon City’s most heavily congested transport corridors. Moving in a high-visibility defensive formation, the worker-cyclists transformed their daily commute into a living demonstration of community solidarity.
The post-World Bicycle Day pilot of the Bike Bus affirms active transport, particularly walking and cycling, as an essential shield against imported oil and heavy traffic. It was organized by 350 Pilipinas [2] on behalf of the Mobility Awards [3].
“As Mega Manila commuters to Metro Manila face rising costs and longer travel times, the Bike Bus underscores the urgent need for diverse and safe options for intercity travel. It challenges our cities to lead in providing reliable, accessible, and sustainable mobility,” added Jheny Dabu, sustainable transport campaigner for 350 Pilipinas.
The budget allocated for active transport has seen a cliff drop of over 94 percent from the peak funding of two billion pesos in 2022 to ₱60 million in 2025 and ₱105 million in 2026. This drastic budget slash leaves grassroots measures like the Bike Bus to fill the widening gap in government-funded protected infrastructure.
“While workers are practicing Bayanihan sa Daan to keep each other alive, community solidarity cannot replace state responsibility. Congress must increase the active transport budget to safeguard cyclists and pedestrians,” said Amber Garma, national coordinator for the Mobility Awards.
The cyclists were escorted from Quezon City Hall to Major Dizon Street by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Quezon City Department of Public Order and Safety-Green Transport Division.
Another Bike Bus will be held via EDSA in the morning of June 11, Independence Eve, from Quezon City Hall to the MMDA Bike-to-Work End-of-Trip Facility in Pasig City.
